Managing Users in a Model

You can manage users and assign them roles with certain privileges in every model in a non-single sign-on repository. This tab gives a great overview of all previous and current users who are logged-in to single sign-on repositories.

Setting-Up and Managing Users

You can set up users, manage them and assign them roles for non-single sign-on models in the Users tab in the Maintain Model/Manage Users dialog.

This tab gives a great overview of all previous and current users who are logged-in to single sign-on models. You do not need to set up users as these are automatically taken from the central user management when you log-in to a model. Role assignment also only occurs in the central user management.

Note

Only model administrators can manage users.

A user's name must first be made known to the model before they can log-in to a non-single sign-on model. You can set which rights the user should have within the model by assigning them a user role. The user role already needs to exist for this.

The central login rules and roles determine login for users of single sign-on models. A normal user cannot log-in to the model unless they have at least one permissible role with the same name in the model.

As administrator, you cannot see a user's password. However, you can change or delete a user's password for a non-single sign-on model.

If a user has locked elements in a model and cannot e.g. be contacted, you can log them out of the model. This means that all elements which the user had locked will be available for other users once again.

You cannot rename or delete the standard user Model Administrator.

You cannot rename or delete the standard user Guest. Multiple users can log-in as Guest to the model as they only have read-only rights.

The Users table in the tab of the same name contains the following columns and information:

  • Name: User's name;: can be modified in non-single sign-on models
  • Password: Shows whether a password has been set for logging-in to a non-single sign-on model via the Innovator interface and the possibility to reset it
  • Login: User's login status to the model
  • Display: Display depending on the operating system the user is logged-in to
  • Last Action: when the user last made changes to the model; the row is grayed out if the user exceeds the period of inactivity set for the repository
  • Role: Role which the user logged-in to the model as
  • Lock: Number of current model elements locked by users

There are various ways to create a user for a non-single sign-on model:

  1. If your network's user administration uses the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), you can load user data you require from this source
  2. Load a configuration file with the users, roles etc. from another Innovator model
  3. Manually create new users

You can create as many users as required for your non-single sign-on model.

Creating a New User in a Non-Single Sign-On Model

Context

It only makes sense to create a new user in a non-single sign-on model. (Every user is automatically taken from the central user management when they log-in to the model in a single sign-on model. Role assignment also only occurs in the central user management.)

A newly created user has not yet been assigned a user role. Users who have not been assigned a role cannot log-in to the model (apart from the standard users Model Administrator and Guest).

How to proceed

  1. Jump to the Users tab in the Maintain Model/Manage Users dialog.

  2. Click on New.

A new row called Model User is inserted in the Users table. The name is selected.

  3. Enter the name of the new user. Ensure that the name does not already exist in the Users table.

Assigning a Role to a User of Non-Single Sign-On Model

Context

If roles are defined, you can assign roles to users of a non-single sign-on model.

How to proceed

  1. In the Users table, select the user which you want to set roles for.

  2. Click on Role Assignment.

The dialog of the same name appears.

  3. Activate the check box for each role which should be assigned to the user.

  4. Deactivate the check box for each role which should not be assigned to the user.

Setting a Password for a User of a Non-Single Sign-On Model

Context

A model administrator password can be set when a non-single sign-on model is created. The password can contain a maximum of eight characters. You can set or modify this password at a later date if you are logged-in as model administrator.

Attention

If you forget the administrator's password for a model, log-in as administrator can only be reconfigured by sending the complete repository to MID GmbH.

The administrator cannot recover a password if a user forgets their's. However, it is possible to delete the password and regain access for the user to the model in this way.

You can set passwords for normal users in the Users table.

Every user (including model administrator) can change their password in the User Account group in the Administrative Tasks backstage.

A user must enter the set password if they want to log-in to the model via an Innovator interface and if they want to change their password in User Account.

Note

You can transfer user information from one model to another. Normal users' passwords are also transferred. The administration password cannot be transferred to a new model.

How to proceed

  1. Jump to the Users tab in the Maintain Model/Manage Users dialog.

  2. Click in the row in the Password column in the Users table for the user you want to set a password for.

The selection icon appears in the table cell.

  3. Click on the selection icon.

The Maintain Model/Manage Users dialog appears.

  4. Enter the password in the New Password field.

Both the password verification and the later password request are case sensitive.

  5. Retype the entry in the Retype field.

  6. Close the dialog with OK.

If you have set a password, the entry Yes appears in the Password column; if no password is set, No appears.

  7. If you want to delete the password, click on the delete icon.

The password is deleted without you being asked to confirm this.

Renaming a User in a Non-Single Sign-On Model

Context

You can rename a user.

You cannot rename the standard users Model Administrator and Guest.

How to proceed

  1. In the Name column in the Users table, select the user which you wish to rename.

  2. Enter the new name. Ensure that the name does not already exist in the Users table.

Deleting a User

Context

You can delete a user if they are not currently logged-in to a model.

How to proceed

  1. In the Users table, select the user which you wish to delete.

  2. Click on Delete.

The Are you sure? dialog appears

  3. Click on Yes if you want to delete the user.

    The user is deleted.

Logging-Out a User from the Model

Context

You can log a user out of the model and, in doing so, re-release the elements which were locked by the user for exclusive editing for other users.

How to proceed

  1. In the Users table, select the user which you wish to log-out.

  2. Click on Logout.

The user is logged-out and all elements which were locked by the user for exclusive editing are unlocked.

Completing the Process

How to proceed

  • Close the dialog with Close.

You are automatically logged-out of the model.
