Working in the Measures Dimensions Diagram

The measures dimensions diagram portray cubes and their dimensions. A cube dimension directly shows the dimension level and is linked to the fact set with a key in the ER model.

Displaying Links Between Measures and Dimensions

Measures dimension diagrams depict a submodel of the multi-dimensional model. They show the links between measures and dimensions and offer an alternative view to the cube diagram; the cube and the hierarchies used are the main focus.

Drag the cube and the dimensions it uses into the diagram and show the cube dimensions to create the diagram.

Adding a Cube

How to proceed

  • Select the cube in another tool window and drag-and-drop it to your chosen position in the measures dimension diagram.

A node that shows the existing cube is created in the diagram.

Adding a Cube's Dimensions

How to proceed

  1. Click on a free point in the diagram.

The dimensions are shown below the cube in the Details tool window.

  2. Drag the cube's dimensions from the Details tool window and drop them in the diagram.

Dimensions are shown as nodes and their dimension levels as content in the diagram.

  3. Arrange the dimensions and their dimension levels in the diagram.

Showing Cube Dimensions

How to proceed

  1. Activate the Design>Display>Relationships toggle menu command

All cube dimension edges that can be shown are grayed out in the diagram.

  2. Select Show all from the context menu in the diagram.

All cube dimension edges appear in black.

  3. Finish the process by deactivating the Design>Display>Relationships toggle menu command.

Cube dimensions are shown as edges from the cube to a dimension edge in the diagram.

Refactoring Dimension or Hierarchy Nodes

Context

You can convert node dimensions and hierarchies with node content into nodes with compartments so that a Measures Dimensions diagram which contains lots hierarchies used by cubes is more compact. You can also reverse this process.

How to proceed

  1. Select a dimension or hierarchy's node which has node content that you want to display using compartments.

  2. Select Refactor>To node with compartments in the context menu.

The node is displayed with compartments.

  3. To reverse the process, select Refactor>To node with node contents.

The node is displayed with node content.

Displaying Use of Hierarchies as Direct Edges to Cubes

Prerequisites

The hierarchy can only be contained once in the diagram and the respective cube dimension cannot exist in the diagram.

Context

You can display the use of a hierarchy directly as an edge between the cube and hierarchy so that a Measures Dimensions diagram which contains lots hierarchies used by cubes is more compact.

To do this, remove the dimension level's node. You can then show the edge.

How to proceed

  1. Remove the dimension level's node from the diagram.

  2. Select Design>Display>Relationships (Ctrl+Shift+R).

    The diagram area is grayed.

  3. Select the relationship to be shown.

Visible relationships are shown in black. Hidden relationships are shown in gray.

  4. Select Design>Display>Relationships (Ctrl+Shift+R) again.

Normal view is shown. The edge between cube and hierarchy nodes is shown.
