Find Name

Searching for model elements based on their name and/or element type.

Context

You can use the Find dialog to search for model elements using their names and/or element types.

How to proceed

  1. Select the Start>Browse>Find>Find Name command.

The Find dialog appears and the Find Name tab is activated.

  2. In the Search for field, enter the string which should be in the name of the element you are searching for. An asterisk '*' can be used as wildcard. The drop-down list contains search patterns already used. If you do not enter a string, the search returns all elements of the selected type.
  3. Activate the Match case check box if you want to match case.
  4. Activate the Match whole word check box if you should only search for whole words.

It is not a good idea to use wildcards in the search.

  5. To consider a particular group of elements in the search, activate the Filter radio button and select the group of elements being searched for from the drop-down list.
  6. To consider a particular type in the search instead, activate the Exact Type radio button and select the type of element being searched for from the drop-down list. The (all) entry searches without type constraint.
  7. Deactivate the Itemize only instantiated Types check box if you do not want to constrain the drop-down list of types to the types used in the model. The search will not return any hits for these types but it may be useful if you want to save the search without it being linked to the current model.
  8. If you want to constrain the search to selected elements and their successors, e.g. a package, then activate the Only within the selected elements check box in the Search options group.

If you do not do this, then the whole model is searched through.

  9. If you want the search hits to replace the previous content in the result region, then activate the Overwrite result region check box in the Search options group.

If you do not do this, then the results are added to the previous results.

  10. Click on Find.

The dialog box remains open to continue your search or add new entries. You can continue to work normally in the model while the search is being carried out.
