Exporting Architecture Elements

ArchiMate® export allows you to save selected ArchiMate® model elements as XML files.

Making Architecture Elements Available to Other Tools

The ArchiMate® export is an easy way to output ArchiMate® model elements.

ArchiMate® model elements can be exported from Innovator as XML files in the "ArchiMate Model Exchange" format.

XML export is possible in accordance with ArchiMate® 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2.

Exporting ArchiMate® Model Elements as ArchiMate® XML Files

Prerequisites

You can only export model elements defined by the ArchiMate® standard.

Depending on the output method selected, the export attempts to calculate the amount of elements needed. e.g. if an ArchiMate® diagram is selected, then its contents and referenced ArchiMate® model elements are also output.

If other model elements or only model elements which do not belong to ArchiMate® are selected, then they are ignored upon export.

Context

Export ArchiMate® model elements into XML files to import them into other models or tools.

Configurations

Use the Configure tool window for specifying export settings. If you do not have any of your own configurations, then you can use the "Default" configuration with the default settings.
Export is possible without prior configuration. You can customize the export to suit your individual needs. You can save multiple configurations and then select them via the menu.

Your Own Stereotype:

The right ArchiMate® types must be defined from concepts, concept connections and junctions upon ArchiMate® export. The stereotypes should have the same name as the respective ArchiMate® type or inherit from a stereotype which fulfills this condition. MID's ArchiMate® profiles ensure this.

If the configuration is changed in such a way that this condition is no longer fulfilled, then the ArchiMate® type can be entered using a stereotype property instead.

A string stereotype property needs to be created for every stereotype which can no longer be found using its name. This requires the logical (not localized) name "XsiType". Its default value must be the name of the respective ArchiMate® type, as in the specification, but must be in CamelCase style, e.g. "BusinessService". Stereotype properties are inherited.
If you have more than one specialization with the same ArchiMate® type, then the stereotype property only needs to be at the common parent.

This stereotype property should be added to "Visibility in dialogs" at the stereotype so that it does not appear in the Properties area.

Even if changes are made to the configuration at a later stage, existing model elements still always have the correct value as it is always the default value.

How to proceed

  1. Make a selection you want to carry out in accordance with the configuration. The default configuration exports all ArchiMate® model elements and diagrams of the entire model; additional selection is not required.

  2. Select a user-defined configuration from the Import/Export>Export>ArchiMate® menu.

A standard dialog box for selecting the target file set is opened.

  3. Select the target file or specify a new one.

  4. Click on OK.

The selected ArchiMate® model elements are exported to the file, along with their stereotype properties, labels, specification texts and stereotype used.

The progress dialog shows the estimated time left. It is also possible to cancel the export.
