Modifying how Relationships are Displayed
The respective notation determines how relationships are displayed in a diagram. This also includes information about whether the edges are always shown as rectangular or whether they can be displayed as any number of polygonal lines. You can modify the representation of polygonal lines.
Context
You can modify the representation of relationships which are shown in the diagram as polygonal lines corresponding to their notation.
You can see what type of edge is used from the mouse pointer when you hover over the edge.
Mouse Pointer | Representation |
---|---|
![]() |
The "change vertical and horizontal size" pointer indicates a right-angled edge display in which you can only move the edges. |
![]() |
The "move" pointer shows that you can define any number of edge points in the polygonal line by clicking with the mouse and dragging an edge point to wherever you want. |
If a relationship can be shown as any number of polygonal lines, then the following display options are available:
-
Display with edge points that can be moved (polygon).
-
Right-angled display with one or more edge points
-
Straight display with no edge points
Additional graphic elements such as the name, cardinalities or role descriptors can "hang" on a relationship edge. If you have explicitly positioned these attached elements, they will be set to their new default position automatically if appropriate when modifying the relationship display.
How to proceed
-
In order to achieve any display with freely positionable edge points, click with the mouse on the edge and drag an edge point to the desired position. You can only remove the outmost edge point by dragging it to the linked element.
Explicitly positioned attached elements remain in position.
-
In order to achieve a right-angled display while retaining edge points, press the [Shift] key and double-click on the edge.
Explicitly positioned attached elements remain in position.
-
In order to achieve a right-angled display with a maximum of one edge point, press the [Ctrl] key and double-click on the edge.
Explicitly positioned attached elements are set to their new default position.
-
Double-click on the edge to show it as a line.
Explicitly positioned attached elements are set to their new default position.
