Setting Notations for Creating New ER Diagrams

You can use various notations for entity relationship diagrams.

Notations for ER Diagrams in the Conceptual Model

The entity relationship model supports various notations. Innovator for Database Architects supports the following notations:

Default Diagram Notation

You can set customer-specific standard diagram notations in the Options dialog in the Display tab in the Entity Relationship Modeling Options group.

You can change the display to another in ER diagrams using the context menu.

Classic SERM notation

You can set SERM notation display in all diagrams in the Options dialog Display in the Entity Relationship Modeling Options group with the Classic SERM notation check box.

If this check box is activated, edges are shown in SERM notation and Innovator Data classiX. If it is not activated, then it is only shown in standard SERM notation. These settings can only be changed for the user and not for each individual diagram.

Switch ER Notation

You can change the display to another in ER diagrams using the context menu.

Note:

SERM notation is the only notation to control the hierarchy left-right assignment of diagram nodes.

If you change ER display to SERM notation, then a note appears at the bottom of the diagram that says that diagram nodes and relationship edges have probably been moved. Read-Only Mode is activated for the diagram.

Jumping to Edit Mode irrevocably stores any changes to positioning.

Changing Notation in the ER Diagram

Context

Set the respective Default Diagram Notation in the options to get to the display of ER diagrams that you prefer and have created yourself (see "Default Diagram Notation").

You can change how an existing ER diagram is displayed as often as required.SERM notation is an exception for this (see "Switch ER Notation").

How to proceed

  1. Select an ER diagram in the context menu Switch ER Notation><ER notation>.

The ER diagram's notation is changed. If you change ER display to SERM notation, then a note appears at the bottom of the diagram that says that diagram nodes and relationship edges have probably been moved. Read-Only Mode is activated for the diagram.

  2. Jump to the Edit Mode to irrevocably change the ER diagram to SERM notation.
